There's a number of variations out there. I think one key item is don't inflate them so high that you don't get any fork movement. You can end up bending the front fender if you've attached to it. 

I've had one in mine for two years now and haven't had any issues with bending or distortion of the fender. I only run about 8 psi in mine. That gives a good amount of cushion and allows the forks to work without bottoming out over big bumps.
